The West Australian Football Commission was guaranteed $10.3 million dollars a year by the state government and the AFL to allow the Eagles and the Dockers to play home matches at Optus Stadium.įremantle’s AFLW team hosted the stadium’s first-ever footy match when they duked it out with Collingwood on the 10th of February, 2018. The whole place was built with the intention of giving a new home ground to Perth’s two senior-most Australian Football League clubs - the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Dockers. The capacity can be increased to 65,000 seats when rectangular sports, such as rugby and soccer, are played on the field.įrom March to September, Optus Stadium is used for AFL matches. It only trails behind the MCG and Stadium Australia. With a capacity of 61,266 (including standing room), Optus Stadium is the third largest stadium in Australia. The official opening took place on the 21st of January the following year.
